FAQ

About Tessera

Is Tessera only for clinical registries? Or can it be used for different types of registries in other fields?

Tessera can be used for a variety of applications in many different industries, not just health care. Please request a demo or contact us so that we can discuss how Tessera can be used for your specific needs.

How does Tessera integrate with existing systems and technologies?

Tessera integrates via SMART-on-FHIR apps, Health Gateway connections, CareConnect document sharing and EMR/EHR systems using HL7 messaging protocols for seamless inbound/outbound data exchange.

What are the technical requirements for implementing Tessera?

Tessera operates on a cloud-based infrastructure (Azure SQL servers, React/Node frameworks, GraphQL APIs) with PowerBI workspaces for analytics. Implementation requires single-sign-on access and network authentication within health authority environments.

What is Tessera’s user interface and UX design like?

Tessera features an intuitive user interface with episode-based data entry screens optimized for clinical workflows, mirroring electronic charting flows to ensure ease of use.

How is Tessera different from a customized version of Salesforce, REDCap or other form platforms?

Tessera is purpose built for clinical registries, not retrofitted from form tools. Unlike CRM or intake form platforms, Tessera’s foundation is structured around health data standards like FHIR, enabling more sophisticated workflows, real data stewardship, longitudinal views and faster insight generation – without the endless customization cycles.

Why should I use Tessera when I can just build a registry in a clinical information system like Cerner, Epic or Meditech?

Clinical information systems (CIS) are designed primarily to support direct patient care, not longitudinal program-level insights. Registries require structured data that’s often outside the clinical workflow – specific observations, quality measures, patient-reported outcomes – which standard CIS setups rarely capture well. Tessera complements CIS systems by gathering the data programs actually need for operational reporting, driving insights, quality improvement and research – without disrupting frontline care.

We’re already collecting some data in REDCap or clinical trial systems. Why do we need Tessera?

REDCap and similar tools are excellent for structured, time-limited studies, but clinical registries are living, evolving programs that span years, sometimes decades. Tessera supports longitudinal data management, complex cohort definitions, patient and external provider contributions, and seamless integration into analytic environments – all things that clinical trial systems are not built to handle at scale. And yes, we can import your existing data from REDCap or similar platforms to help you establish your registry foundation.

Privacy & Security

Where does Tessera host its data?

Tessera is a Canadian company and hosts all of its data on servers in Canada.

What security measures are in place to protect data and ensure compliance with industry regulations?

Tessera complies with privacy impact assessments (PIA) and security risk assessments (STRA). It employs encryption protocols, secure storage mechanisms, regular vulnerability testing and strict access controls.

Will we own and control our data?

Absolutely. Tessera is built on the principle of data stewardship – you maintain full ownership and control. You’ll always have direct access to your data through workspaces, exports, and reports – without needing to pay us for extracts or special access. Further, all of your data will be hosted on servers located in Canada and comply with all relevant PII standards.

Getting Started With Tessera

What training and support options are available for new users of Tessera?

We want to ensure that you have the best experience possible with Tessera, which is why we offer onboarding sessions, user manuals, video tutorials, live webinars and ongoing support for new users.

How long does implementation typically take?

Since Tessera is based on a pre-configured, standards-driven core, most registries can launch within a few months – often much faster than custom builds or CRM repurposing. Timelines will depend on the complexity of the registry’s data set; however, Tessera is designed for quick starts without sacrificing quality.
